AIS Group eMail

Introduction

Via the AIS server, you can arrange that different groups of eMails are downloaded to different machines, while still using the same AIS account. For instance, you could arrange that your home machine downloads only eMail for your family, while your portable downloads only sales-related eMails, and your fixed work machine downloads all other eMail. While this is possible using some eMail client programs, the AIS group eMail facility allows you to do this with almost any eMail client program, such as Microsoft Outlook Express,

An Example

Taking the above example (asuming that you are myname.a-i-s.co.uk), suppose that on your machines you would like to download just eMail as follows:

Home machine Portable Work machine
andy@myname.a-i-s.co.uk
becky@myname.a-i-s.co.uk
charlie@myname.a-i-s.co.uk
thedog@myname.a-i-s.co.uk
sales@myname.a-i-s.co.uk
complaints@myname.a-i-s.co.uk
all other eMails

First, set up two groups, say home and portable. Then, add names to these groups as below. Note that you do not need to specify a third catch-all group.

home portable
andy
becky
charlie
thedog
sales
complaints

Next, you need to configure your eMail client programs. You need to specify the POP server address as www.a-i-s.co.uk (rather than pop.a-i-s.co.uk), and to set the POP server port to 6900 (rather than the default 110). The account name should be set to your AIS login name followed by a hyphen and the group name; if your AIS login name is min.a-i-s.co.uk then use min.a-i-s.co.uk=home on your home machine and min.a-i-s.co.uk=portable on your portable. On your work machine, leave the account name simply as the AIS login name min.a-i-s.co.uk; this will then collect any eMail that is not destined for home nor portable.

Exactly how this is done depends on the particular program, however for Microsoft Outlook Express go to the Tools menu and select Accounts, then pick the Mail tab on the dialog box that appears. Select the required account and click the Properties button; the POP server address and account name are set under the Servers tab, the POP server port under the Advanced tab,

Configuring Group eMail

You will first need to contact AIS to have this facility set up for you. The AIS group eMail facility can then be controlled by a set of web pages. Click here to access these pages. You will need to provide the name and password that you use when uploading pages by FTP, plus your AIS login name; this is to stop anyone else from altering your settings.
